During the colonial period, the Viceroyalty of Peru, based out of Lima was one of the wealthiest and most important regions of the Spanish Empire, due to its vast natural resources, including silver and gold mines, as well as its strategic location for trade.

Lima today is the official capital and a megacity with a population of 10 million. It is a blend of some of the ugliest and most beautiful architecture I've ever seen.

Ugly, unfortunately, is the modern-day typical Peruvian architecture, characterised by incomplete-looking concrete buildings with reinforcement bars hanging out from the top of every structure.

Beautiful, on the other hand, is the colonial and architectural heritage. Also, a couple of modern barrios (neighbourhoods) that stand out for their quality of life, which I consider among the highest I’ve seen in Latin America. A good thing about these two barrios is that they’re affordable.

Lima even rivals socialist-stricken Buenos Aires, especially in imported goods. I had a field day loading up on Patagonia brand hiking gear without having to sell a little finger, as I would if I wanted the socialist equivalent brand called Montagne in Argentina.

Montagne is priced in Argentina as if it's the Hugo Boss of the hiking world, it ain’t, but those Argentine socialist politicians had to pay for their second house in Madrid somehow.

Libertarian and current president Javier Milei will fix this - viva la libertad , carajo!

Anyway, this article is about Perú, I’ll get back to writing about Argentina now I’m back in my Buenos Aires apartment.

Arequipa, the unofficial capital city of 1.2 million has become one of my favourite cities in Latin America.

It’s great for;

• Remote workers.

• Latin American history enthusiasts.

• Food connoisseurs - steak & fresh grass-fed local produce.

• Backpackers.

• Hiking/trekking fan - for all levels.

• Enjoyer of literally the most perfect weather at a pleasant altitude.

In this article, I want to go through my recommendations after my second visit to the country with a focus on Arequipa - a city I could spend months in for deep work. I'll provide geoarbitrage tips, share a story or two and show the exact costs of a trip like this for me.

In total, in Perú, I've visited and spent considerable time in the following cities:

• Cusco (flooded with tourists, but great)

• Trujillo (third-largest city, a shithole)

• Huaraz (shithole city with a couple of great cafes but world-class hiking)

• Arequipa (purpose of this article)

• Lima (great city)

First off some quick commentary on Lima.

Lima (10 million people megacity).

The two barrios offering the highest quality of life I’ve seen in Latin America are Miraflores and Barranco.

Don’t bother staying anywhere else in Lima, look for Airbnbs in these two, which you can find for $900-2000 USD per month, with ocean views.

However, the ocean views are not good for 8-9 months per year due to the Humboldt Current effect on the climate, which brings in a thick, humid-cold fog and downright miserable weather during that time - even though you’re basically on the Equator and should be surrounded by palm trees and coconuts.

Temperatures generally range from around 15°C to 22°C (59°F to 72°F) throughout the year, just either with or without fog. But the sunny days are perfect, and we luckily got a few in while having a decent surf!

To top it off for this Tasmania who grew up drinking and eating (the world’s) freshest dairy, there are gringo supermarkets with the best produce I’ve seen in Latin America in these barrios, including, wait for it, fresh milk ($1.10 p/L) - a delicacy for me and anyone who has spent the last 18 months in Buenos Aires.

Lower taxes on imported goods make Perú a great place to shop (compared to Argentina). Right in the heart of Miraflores is an amazing shopping centre (Larcomar) with everything I've missed out on in Argentina (until Milei fixes that situation).

On the way out of Lima, unfortunately, and possibly from surfing in dirty water, I ended up catching a nasty virus (my mate as well, but not to my level). A lot of disappointment followed as we tried (unsuccessfully) to hike the 9-day HuayHuash circuit, which is one of the world's best hikes. We ended up walking out, feeling very average and defeated, after just 2 days.

What was even more worrisome was that I was so sick that the local Peruvian doctor put me on ciprofloxacin, a very strong antibiotic that comes with a ton of worrying side effects.

I didn’t realise these side effects until after taking a full course, and an Australian doctor contact told me to “get better and then throw them in the damn bin ASAP.”

So, if you’re ever in Latin America and the bloody doctor prescribes you kryptonite (ciprofloxacin antibiotics) swap it out for an alternative - I’m not going to recommend one because I’m not a doctor - but be very cautious.

I'm all G now! Moving on to the positives of the trip, which was a very welcomed time and no shit, this place is now one of my favourite cities in Latin America.

Arequipa (1.2 million people).

Easily my favourite city in Peru. Located in the southern Andes of Peru, at 2,335m or 7,661ft, it’s at a pleasant altitude compared to the likes of Cusco, which is just too damn high for staying long-term at 3,400m or 11,200ft, in my opinion.

Arequipa has the most perfect weather for 9-10 months per year. During the day, temperatures range from 18°C to 25°C (64°F to 77°F) throughout the year. At night, temperatures can drop to around 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F).

But, throw 300 sunshine days in per year with those temperatures and I hope it sets the scene for what is to come.

Arequipa is known as the "White City" due to a tonne of colonial-era buildings constructed from sillar, a white volcanic stone over 483 years.

Located at the foot of the Misti Volcano, it’s Peru's second-largest city and a major commercial hub.

The city's historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, features epic baroque churches, monasteries, and mansions. Arequipa is also renowned for its culinary scene - it rivals Lima and Lima’s culinary scene is considered world-class.

Many wealthy Basque Spanish immigrants settled in the colonial period, and this is evident as soon as you step out of the beautiful historic centre. You immediately see the typical Peruvian architecture, characterised by concrete buildings with reinforcement bars protruding from the top of every structure.

The Basque people, known for their strong entrepreneurial spirit, often played significant roles in the economic and social development of the regions where they settled.

I had some strikingly strange conversations with local very European-looking Arequipeños who considered themselves non-Peruvians. When they heard my Argentine Castellano accent, they were quick to tell me about their affection for Argentina - this part I enjoyed.

Also, for those of you interested in mining (me), Cerro Verde Mine, the third biggest copper resource in the world, is located 20 kilometres from the city. You certainly see and hear about the influence and the resulting improved quality of life for locals.

What to do?

Hiking/trekking:

I prefer to do it solo; I hate groups and like to move at my own pace. But sometimes, you have to go with the flow, especially for the volcanoes.

I’m a geology nerd, so I’m going to list the volcanoes close to the city that offer incredible views, adding to the city's attractions:

• Ampato Volcano: 6,288 meters (20,630 feet) - dormant

• Pichu Pichu Volcano: 5,664 meters (18,583 feet) - dormant

• Chachani Volcano: 6,057 meters (19,872 feet) - dormant

• Misti Volcano: 5,822 meters (19,101 feet) - active

Many local businesses in town offer 1-2 night group tours to these volcanoes.

Unfortunately for me, I had bronchitis at this stage and was unable to attempt anything too difficult.

But, luckily I was healthy enough to do Colca Canyon.

Colca Canyon is the second deepest canyon in the world. It is approximately 3,270 meters (10,730 feet) deep at its deepest point, making it more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the US. It’s damn epic, it has terraced agriculture dating back to pre-Inca times, and the Andean condors soaring above.

We did a one-night trip by ourselves, which consisted of a long 5-hour bus from Arequipa followed by a 7-hour hike from the top of the canyon to the bottom - a called Sangalle.

Once we got down to the bottom of the canyon, there was a tonne of fresh produce in the towns, fresh avocados for $0.10, and alpaca stew with fresh potatoes (there are 4,000 different varieties of potatoes grown in Perú).

I love that kind of stuff when I'm travelling. The local cheese (Queso de Colca) is insanely tasty; we kept eating it every chance we had.

The next day involved a hike out of the canyon, with a 1000m (3,200ft) elevation gain. Despite dealing with the aftermath of bronchitis and taking kryptonite pills, we managed to complete the hike in only about 3 hours. We then went to some Andean hot springs on the bus ride back to soothe our legs before travelling all the way back to Arequipa.

Restaurants and cafes:

Now, this, in my view, sets Arequipa apart from many places I’ve travelled to in Latin America.

All of these places are in the historical centre part of Arequipa, which is entirely walkable.

Zig Zag Restaurant: A top 3 restaurant in Latin America for me.

Nothing better than fresh grass-fed sourced local produce - which is the only ingredient they serve.

A three-course meal with a bottle of Chilean wine costs $40-45 USD.

Latin America is unbeatable for this.

The next best restaurant:

13 Monjas Resturant:

Damn, incredible - but different - fresh local organic pizza and wine.

This place was great and it’s downright beautiful.

A pizza costs $10 USD, enough said.

Cafes & where to work from:

Two absolute belters come to mind, with fast wifi and great for spending the entire day, where you can get Australian quality coffee, breakfast, and lunch for only $15-20 USD.

They are Republica Cafe and KaffeeHaus Cafe.

My number one was called Republica Cafe.

Selina - Arequipa:

I got a one-week pass for $40 USD to come in here for some videos I wanted to record for you, also it’s damn beautiful here with a pool and garden area to enjoy that Areuipan 300 days per year sunshine.

A great travel hack for remote workers is to avoid staying at Selina (it's too expensive) and instead book an Airbnb nearby. You can then pay for the co-working facilities, which are reasonably priced. This allows you to attend the events they host, especially if you're travelling solo and want to meet new people.

There are always beautiful women around, and you can sometimes meet interesting people, although I find that many people here are a bit too woke for my liking - lots of loud Californian democrats with tech jobs!

Partying/bars:

The main bar and liveliest street in the historic centre is called Calle San Francisco. There are plenty of bars and even clubs where you could get yourself into all sorts of fun trouble.

Just take a walk through that street, and you’ll see what I mean. It’s full of vibes, with lots of Europeans, Americans, and European-looking Arequipeños all out and having a good time.

Museum:

Museo Histórico Municipal Guillermo Zegarra Meneses - $8 USD entry.

I love museums, and this is one of the best ones I’ve been to in Latin America! It’s an old Spanish aristocratic mansion and has a ton of European colonial relics and art.

Airbnb:

Only stay in the historical centre - close to Plaza de Armas.

Another Latin American geoarbitrage win:

I paid $400 USD for two queen-sized beds in a big apartment.

Excellent wifi, kitchen and workspace.

A tip with Airbnb is to try and get weekly or monthly long-term discounts which automatically get applied to the price when booking on those timeframes.

Costs & Geoarbitrage.

Okay, let’s break all the costs involved with this trip.

One of the biggest cost savers is to use the multiRed ATMs in Perú to withdraw cash (Peruvian Soles).

Current exchange rate is $1 USD = ~$3.8 SOL.

If you use the big Latin American banks such as Santander, BBVB or any other ATM you will likely pay ~$10-15 USD more in fees per withdrawal.

Peru is still very much cash-only in many places, so these extra fees can seriously add up!

Flights:

Buenos Aires (AEP always) - Lima: $510 return on Aerolinas Argentinas.

Lima - Arequipa, 90 minutes, $100 return on LatAm Airline.

Accomodation:

Airbnb = $400.

Split between me and = $200 total each for the two weeks.

Food - including restaurants/cafes and drinks:

Looking back at my Wise Bank & Revolut Banks purchases: I spend $50-60 per day living like a king - mostly eating out = $700.

Hiking/trekking:

$75 for the buses and entry to the Colca Canyon and it’s $100 to overnight hike a volcano = $175.

Total: $1,690 USD from Buenos Aires for a two-week holiday living like a king, eating out every day and night and doing the best activities.

Summary:

Both Lima and Arequipa don't seem too popular with the digital nomad crowd and seem to fly under the radar in Latin America.

I even caught up with the well-travelled and well-known Wandering Investor in Buenos Aires and was surprised to hear he hadn’t spent any time in Perú.

Both cities are incredibly affordable and offer a lot for travellers. Lima, in particular, offers some of the highest quality living I’ve experienced in Latin America, honestly surpassing socialist-stricken Buenos Aires in many ways.

Lima is a great place to visit with your girlfriend, wife, or mates. You could easily spend a few months there during the summer before the fog sets in and the weather turns to complete shit for 8-9 months.

You can pair this with a visit to the historic centre of Arequipa, which has perfect weather for 8-9 months either for a holiday or as a base and put your head down and do some deep work while enjoying the hiking, the food, and the architecture.

Both cities are extremely safe in the areas I have mentioned, which is incredibly important to note given the reputation of this continent.

There's a reason I went back to Perú for a second time, I like it and it’s still very underrated. I’m fortunate enough to be a well-off foreigner in this part of the world which means I can go to have these trips often.

Trips like this are a big reason I left my professional job in Australia and now find myself in Buenos Aires. I want the freedom to holiday when I want and for how long I want.

However, I always appreciate returning to my base in Argentina after these holidays, and of course, my girlfriend.

No boss, no alarm clock, minimising taxes (I’m getting there), working towards something (investing related) on your terms and enjoying holidays with a base in my favourite country - Argentina.

To me, this is the best livin’ and hopefully, I can encourage you to do something similar.

I regularly type 'Australia / Tasmania' into X (Twitter) and Google to see what's currently being discussed in the news.

The stories often seem like complete insanity compared to what I observed in my adopted home of the last 18 months - Argentina.

Here’s a bit of context:

Every morning in Buenos Aires, right after waking up, I start my day with a routine. I sit down with my mate 🧉, and turn on the Argentine news from La Nación on my TV.

For about 30 minutes, I absorb as much as I can, struggling with the difficulty of Argentine Spanish (on the news) - bloody tough for a 33-year-old Australian bogan.

I highly recommend you pay attention to this channel if you’re interested in Argentina (and for practising your Spanish) - La Nación (centre-right Argentine news) has a 24-hour live channel on YouTube. This is how I think you can find an edge as a free independent thinker. Engage with content that holds broad significance and might be considered less typical to consume for someone with my background.

These issues with Argentina are well documented in this publication but here is a quick rundown of the current situation.

Inflation is 287%, and wages are comparable to those in West Africa, despite consumer goods prices being on par with Australia's.

I’m not an expert, but as I tick over two years since my departure from Australia, I’m not distracted by the stress and constraints of a workplace anymore, and I find I form many opinions nowadays with the complete freedom to think.

X has been instrumental in facilitating these discussions for me. I've gained some traction from it, I’ve discovered investment opportunities through that traction, and it's likely how I've connected with you. I've also made good friends through it.

Yes, the secret is having a beautiful Argentine girlfriend generally helps gain traction in your account.

But my overall honest take may be surprising to you.

I don’t particularly enjoy posting, I find it quite uncomfortable. I’m quite introverted and after reading Doombergs take on X and why they departed the platform last year, it’s always on my mind how I can potentially move over to Substack notes.

I find myself spending more and more time on Substack and discovering some incredibly insightful reads. However, it's worth noting that a longer attention span is often needed to consume 90% of the content, which can be a struggle for me. This is where I believe X has the edge unless Substack notes really takes off.

On X, I’m one of those people who love to see what people are saying and enjoy communicating with those who take an interest in what I have to say.

95% of X is fantastic, but the remaining 5% can be damn challenging, especially in the early days when people begin to take an interest in what you have to say.

It's also surprising how some individuals can become spiteful when others show interest in your account.

Not an unexpected behaviour given the amount of time and effort some people invest in the platform each day.

Furthermore, there are serious degenerates who hide behind anonymous accounts solely to troll. Imagine their lives, sad.

Ultimately, it boils down to the bell curve—the normal distribution effect. The more exposure your tweets and profile get, the higher the likelihood of encountering individuals who linger at the fringes of societal norms.

It's crucial to recognise this. Of course, I like to hear the opinions of others, but I certainly don’t let negative personal attacks affect my well-being (don’t worry, I’ve had some shockers).

I highly value the thoughts of my close inner circle.

Having been a lone ranger for many years, I've recently come to realise through various content I consume just how essential it is to maintain a tight-knit circle of friends and family.

Now with that off chest, let’s look at my take on the X free-speech debacle in Australia:

SYDNEY, April 23 (Reuters) - Elon Musk lashed out at Australia's prime minister on Tuesday after a court ordered his social media company X take down footage of an alleged terrorist attack in Sydney, and said the ruling meant any country could control "the entire internet".

X said it had already blocked the posts from Australian users, but Australia's e-Safety Commissioner had said the content should be taken down since it showed explicit violence.

"Does the PM think he should have jurisdiction over all of Earth?" Musk wrote in a post, referring to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

It’s a power struggle.

Australia thinks they have the right to dictate what the rest of the world thinks.

Again.

No shit, you see this increasingly in the everyday Australian who wants the third world to stop burning fossil fuels and start living under socialist regimes, which is basically the act of pulling up the ladder after they’ve used.

Elon Musk strikes back rightfully so putting Australia back in its place of global importance.

To top it off, Tasmanian bogan (white trash) popular female politician - Jacqui Lambie saying Musk should be locked up is completely ridiculous and she should be dismissed as having any credibility as a politician from this point forward.

Will that happen? Of course not, her words will be heard by the narrow-minded Australians who seem to vote for her.

What they will fundamentally fail to realise is that her words are completely against the historic values of Australia.

Free speech.

I don’t care about Jacquie Lambie to talk about her anymore, but the broader issue here is the significant threat to free speech posed by recent developments by the Australian government - court-ordered.

This should be alarming to everyone who values democracy and freedom of expression. It’s crucial that we resist this kind of censorship and maintain our right to express our views openly, without fear of repercussion.

The government has no right to sensor, in my strong Geólogo Trader view it should be completely up to the individual.

Will there be robust opposition to this in Australia? Unlikely.

As you will recall, my departure from Australia was largely driven by the oppressive measures implemented during the COVID era, particularly by what I consider the draconian leadership of Mark McGowan in Western Australia—with disturbingly broad public support.

My advice? Vote with your feet.

Moving away not only broadens your perspective but exposes you to the true scale of global issues, highlighting the parochial concerns back home in Australia. After gaining such insights, it becomes increasingly difficult to respect the viewpoints of those who contributed to these policies.

Building an audience on X has been a transformative experience for me. It has connected me with friends and enabled enriching discussions with those who articulate their thoughts clearly and share similar values.

News through X and the value offered by some accounts is unbeatable. I will continue posting and engaging as I think it’s an important outlet for free speech.

I'm also relieved that the platform has moved away from the pre-Musk era which was a complete propaganda tool dominated by the woke, Western influence of San Francisco Democrats.

That being said, it's crucial to keep your children well away from the platform, as uncensored content requires the context that only good parenting can provide.

I feel there is a lot of raw emotion on Twitter, which often overshadows constructive content and leads to too much shit on the platform.

I’m very mindful of the type of individual it can attract at the opposite side of the spectrum, fuck heads, especially if you have an audience. The article written by Doomberg last year, which I alluded to earlier, has me thinking about what potential Substack notes can hold.

I want to run through what I’ve pieced together about men’s health.

Strange, I know, but there seems to be an audience for it.

Now, why the hell would a Geólogo Trader have any credibility in this subject?

Truth is, I absolutely don’t, so take it all with a grain of salt, por favor!

My brother is a high-level professional athlete in Australia, and most of my friends prioritise health and fitness above all else, while I tend to be more of a quiet observer, I still take it seriously.

One thing the black sheep lifestyle has enabled is plenty of time on my hands to dive down the path of alternative thinking.

As I’ve been led down the path of the red pill, it’s changed how I think about, politics, women, lifestyle choices, and this topic I’ll touch on here health.

I’m not a diet fanatic, never have been, and never will be, I love burgers and beers too much.

Especially a triple beef paddy Grand McTasty at Ezeiza Airport for $5, IYKYK.

I’m 33 years old, and you only need to look around in public to know that things start to go downhill quite quickly after age 30 for most men.

How do you go about preventing this?

Well, after many years of trying to figure this out, I found a rough recipe for health and exercise that works for me (thus far).

Recently, I took a blood test (first one ever) due to our family's history of “high cholesterol” and my recent decision to adhere to tyranny for financial gain and go for the three COVID clot shots.

No warnings! It was all good, great in fact.

Bottom line first, I don’t eat anything like they told us at school.

I eat the most of the eat moderately and eat less of the eat most group.

Living in Argentina complements this nicely.

• Animal-based diet

• Vitamins K2/MK7 & D3

• Creatine

• Magnesium

• Zinc

• Yerba mate

• Weights/cardio

• Natural environment exercise

I’m 6’6 (200cm) tall and currently weigh 103kg (227 lbs) with a mesomorph (medium) build, which means I have to do some cardio or I get too fat & heavy with all the calories I eat.

Animal-based diet:

Following a natural diet is straightforward. Simply consume the foods that nature intended for you to eat. Nature provides fruits for consumption to aid in plant reproduction. Similarly, your body is biologically equipped to extract nutrients from meat and eggs. With a stomach pH comparable to that of a lion, and only a small portion of the human digestive tract dedicated to processing plant material, it's clear that our bodies are optimized for animal-based nutrition.

While I wouldn't categorise myself as a strict adherent to any specific dietary regimen, these foods likely constitute around 80% of my diet.

Steak is my favourite. I usually eat one to two per day here in Argentina.

Vitamins K2/MK7 & D3:

Cardiovascular health is very important to me, especially after three clot shots and a family history of heart disease. This is why I think this combination is beneficial.

I always try and get vitamin D3 from sitting in the morning sun for 15 minutes per day in summer which is easy to do here in Buenos Aires for 9 months of the year. In winter I’ll take vitamin K2 MK7/D3 supplements.

But, over the last year, I’ve been supplementing this every day, and the studies seem quite convincing on the health benefits.

Creatine:

Particularly beneficial for people of my height, as it aids in filling out long limbs. I've personally noticed the ability to do a few extra reps in the gym and an overall increase in energy levels. It's a well-researched, safe supplement with compelling results.

I take 5 grams just before my workout. When I'm traveling, I opt for the pill form for simplicity. Creatine monohydrate powder is the cheapest form and is readily available worldwide.

Magnesium:

Very important for sleep and heart health, fish and dark chocolate are my sources. I can only find magnesium citrate supplements here in Argentina.

I use magnesium citrate is a popular form of magnesium due to its high bioavailability and ease of absorption. I take one tablet per day, it is also reasonably priced.

Zinc:

This one is essential for men, I swear by it and it’s good for your performance in bed, prostate, and immunity. Eat oysters if you can, I also have zinc supplements because it’s so important.

I use zinc citrate daily, this form is also well-absorbed and is commonly used in supplements for immune health and overall well-being and it’s reasonably priced.

Yerba mate:

For those of you who don’t know yerba mate, it’s a traditional South American herbal tea made from the leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis plant.

It’s a cult here in South America. I make one every morning and just continually sip out of it most of the day. I don’t add anything just warm water (never boiling). It’s also a healthy way to consume caffeine.

Weight training & cardiovascular exercise:

This is well known on how you reverse and prevent aging and especially important to me now I’m well into my 30’s. Also essential for my mental health.

Also, I honestly don’t think you can be having a bad day after you’ve spent 30 mins boxing a heavy bag. It’s seriously essential for any man.

If you want to spend less time in the gym and get the most out of your workout, listen to podcasts and follow on YouTube the 6x Mr. Olympia, from the 1990s, Dorian Yates. The Dorian Yates training method will transform how you approach workouts and your attitude in the gym.

My bodybuilder mate got me onto this training and I noticed it so much.

My weekly schedule looks something like this;

• 3-4x weight sessions - Yates method.

• 1-2 cardio (run, bike, swim, boxing).

Natural environment exercise:

I honestly believe that exercising in a natural environment is crucial for every human. I used to spend weeks at a time walking 20 kilometers per day through the Outback of Australia as an Exploration Geologist, mapping geology, and I never felt better!

I used to surf frequently in Tasmania when I was young, and in Bali during my time off from work in the Outback.

Since moving to Argentina, I've exchanged the beaches and waves of Bali, as well as the red desert dust of the Outback, for the snow-capped mountain views of the Patagonian Andes.

This is essential for my mental health. I grew up on a hobby farm, and I go nuts if I don’t escape the city every month.

Buenos Aires is the perfect base for this. I’m always flying to Patagonia. I have a big hiking trip to Peru booked this year, and I’m visiting an exploration project in the Andes this week. So, plenty of that important mountain time for me.

Summary:

One thing I noticed after all my traveling, people, today, in both the West and East are generally not healthy. Chronic diseases and obesity are everywhere and I would hate to see what that would look like without modern medicine.

As I wrote in my last red pill article, highlighting the responsibility of the individual, people need to take their health into their own hands and not rely on the medical profession and big pharmacies to correct their nutritional mistakes in the future.

Has anyone seen those old throwback videos of the beach in the 1970s…

What changed?

This is certainly debatable and not the case everywhere worldwide, but in Latin America, I’ve noticed poverty = obesity.

You quickly figure out why when you see gallons of cheap affordable unnatural seed oils and processed food everywhere in supermarkets and kitchens.

An insight that, for me, clearly underscores the importance of returning to a more natural approach to nutrition and lifestyle.

There is one topic I didn’t mention that I’ll leave to your imagination here, and of course, it sits at the topic of that list by a country mile.

I badly need to write a fun post after the last “grim” one on how useless tax accountants are.

Fuck that was boring, but I appreciate all the great feedback and valuable information shared from that one.

As I’ve previously written about, I hit 31 years old, working a great job with a salary.

But,

There were too many unturned stones for my constantly wandering state of mind (not a great trait to have).

With a little nudge from the woke mindset taking over in my home country Australia, I’ve ended up in the land of beautiful women, steak, and wine.

But not before landing in the land of tacos and tequila, firstly.

A quick Google search of similar themed posts and you have a heap of soy boys/girls or just downright boring travel bloggers who have no personality, evident from their writing.

The only legit one I enjoy reading is Jake Nomada.

Remember when we banned the number one tennis player in the world Novak Djokovic from playing at the Australia Open in 2020? In the name of “health”. The guy is the picture of perfect health.

When Dutch politician Geert Wilders was interviewed by the downright piece of shit Andrew O’Keefe on Channel 7 in 2013. Laughing in his face disparagingly when Wilders spoke nothing but his views backed by solid social data from the immigration situation in the Netherlands.

Watch a mash-up of that interview here, I couldn’t find the original video anymore as I’d say it’s been taken down from old mate Andrew’s appalling antics since.

My favourite example is when Dr. Jordan Peterson visited Australia and appeared on ABC’s (government media) Q & A program in 2019.

An overweight young woke woman condescendingly asked if he had any real advice for young people, who are (apparently) at risk of climate change, instead of just telling them to clean their rooms.

Jordan’s point was how can people solve complicated world issues without fixing up their own lives first;

E.G. Cleaning your fucking room. Fair enough.

He also says “Do you think you are better off than your grandparents?”

I’ve read his book and he talks about this often.

People generally can’t comprehend the struggles of human history.

Stories from my grandparents quickly came to mind. Stealing turnips from farmers’ paddocks just to feed a family of 10 children. With a chance of being subscripted into any of the two world wars that happened within a short period of 20 years.

After that period, some small downturns and minor periods of rough times but overall in the developed West, life became exponentially very good.

Now that leads me to today and the wokeness virus we see infiltrating society, becoming stronger every year.

I love that saying. “Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times.”

Woke people could be considered weak people from the easy times in the developed West. Please note, that I’m focussing on the developed Western countries (such as Australia, Canada, Western Europe, and the USA) and not developing countries with real issues related to corruption, poverty, and violence.

This is such a broad topic that could down rabbit holes for hours, and probably no one would have the patience to read that. So let’s go down a recent woke tragedy and later focus on my experiences in Australia.

I’m going to lump the woke culture in with the outspoken “get your experimental vaccine” COVID crowd. We all should be familiar with how the woke brigade loves to make things personal.

During COVID, anyone who walked out of the house to exercise a basic human right of being able to walk down the street to buy food was called a grandma killer.

The most bizarre part of all this, the majority of people who were saying such a silly thing weren’t those uneducated at the bottom of society, they were the educated class.

This got me thinking. How does such a person, a product of a highly educated and successful society come around to saying such a stupid thing, completely ignoring common sense and human rights?

It’s a product of easy times.

These people haven’t struggled and have adopted woke culture.

I was at university 12 years ago and woke culture was incredibly influential then.

So much so that during my first year I voted for The Australian Greens political party, which is now the third-largest political party in Australia.

The Australian Green Party is probably the biggest danger to the quality of life in Australia. For an Argentine reference, you can consider them the Kirchnerists of Oceania.

An incredibly socialist, hypocritical, and woke political party that gains more support every year, mostly from the young university crowd. Once upon a time, they may have stood for something good. But you can guarantee now they are an absolute country destroying scum.

How did it come about that I voted for these muppets? Well, a look back on my lecturers and tutors would be the answer. Geography was the class was the most popular class that I attended (I studied a Bachelor of Science - Geology). Many Bachelor of Arts students study this as part of their useless degrees (need I say anymore?).

I found out later that the lecturers and tutors were members of The Australian Greens party. I can only imagine what it’s like today as they have much more political power. I often look back on the propaganda from this immensely popular woke discipline.

I remember I was in a human Geography workshop and I strongly supported developing nations burning fossil fuels for energy. That’s the roadmap we used to generate a prosperous society and pull people out of poverty.

The blank stares and emotional responses I got from this.

I remember being overwhelmed by the “this redneck doesn’t think like the rest of us” vibe for the remaining years in that discipline.

Bear in mind the Blundstone boots for fashion-wearing hippies at the University of Tasmania generally don’t take too kindly to a redneck (me) from a small Tasmanian country town. These people have had life so good. They live in their own little sheltered bubble and have no idea how the real world works.

My point is Universities can breed woke socialist idiots. I raised this in an interview recently, if a Geologist has a Ph.D. or shiny honors qualification contrary to what you might think, it’s not necessarily a good thing for a company. Hyperintelligence usually comes at a cost in other areas, such as poor people management or lacking plain old common sense.

Another problem with today is that once upon a time you could escape university and go and work for a company and put the woke bullshit behind you.

Chances of doing that these days? Getting smaller.

I experienced this firsthand and found that the first company I worked for was great.

A smaller resources miner focused simply on mining and exploring for minerals.

I benefited from this setting and enjoyed my time while learning a lot from very smart people.

I don’t want to say too much about the next company I worked for but let’s just say I recently saw a decorated mining manager, one of the smartest and most well-spoken professionals with a career expanding 30 years, including working in the war trenches (metaphor) of West Africa, attending some very questionable woke conferences (likely part of his job role).

I also know a guy who was fired from his job for highlighting results regarding crime statistics committed by certain local people in his hometown. He had lived there for 30 years and his remarks we not racist but an observation backed by the actual crime statistics.

I fear the day the bulge of wokeness that has infected universities for many years moves into positions of power in society. We are just starting to see it happen, like I said I experienced this in university 12 years ago, imagine the situation now. You could escape it once you began in the workforce, but even that is becoming tough as companies move towards wokeness (ESG).

There is some hope. The fall of company profits (creating hard times) from going woke may see a rejection of the woke movement in the future. I’m counting on this.

“Go woke go broke”

Hopefully, this trend continues and we return to companies focussing on being companies and not virtual signalling Disney movies.

If you’re working in the West and you desire a break from it all or simply value speaking your mind and open dialect. I recommend considering moving to Latin America and living life on your terms. Writing about this stuff feels very liberating. Try it out sometime.

How did this all come about? I was sitting in winter Buenos Aires, craving some sun, and received a message from an American girl I met in Brasil asking if I wanted to join a yacht trip in Greece. The trip was seven days in the Saronic Greek islands on a 54-foot brand-new mono-haul Dufour yacht, completely private, so we were able to decide the islands to visit. Sounded good!

There were six girls and they wanted a man to join in. With me being one of only two men on the trip (besides the Skipper and Chef), I considered this a social experiment for myself. I received the whole run down and insights into how these women think, talk with each other, select men (according to some of them all men in the west are entitled).

First, a quick rundown on these high achieving women, all early 30’s, on +$120,000 salary per year, strong Democrat supporters, and single (coincidence?). Although they worked hard in their professions, their views of the world, according to me, were completely backward, whether it be climate change, economics, or politics.

One girl was a Surgeon in California. Me being the curious prick, I always love to drop a “What do you think about Trump?” question in there. The reaction I received got from what is considered one of societies top and well-respected professions (the Surgeon) was nothing but pure emotion. “He’s fat, racist, disgusting, etc..”.

This is how I bonded with the other lad on the yacht, who loved the fact I asked the question without just blindly agreeing with whatever this alpha female said, like so many beta males would these days.

Do not get me wrong here, some of these girls were good-natured, smart, determined, and attractive (to some), and honestly, I wouldn't have even considered writing this post if it wasn’t for what happened the last night and a few lead-up events before that.

A few incidents deeply disappointed me and confirmed my idea of the stereotype of this type of woman. These incidents involved our (male) Skipper and (male) Chef. I’m overly in shock at how friendly and hospitable Greek people are, this is the first time I’ve left Latin America in over a year and maybe it’s a product of that. One of my favorite things about Greeks is their reaction when someone tells them they're a vegan, they literally burst out laughing. Of course, I love this, and of course, some of the girls on the yacht were vegan (democrats, California, single, etc…). The reaction from our Greek crew to their obscene dietary habits rubbed these girls up the wrong way.

The Chef (named Kostas) was a middle-aged Greek man with a young family on his first trip with the yacht company. He travelled all the way from Crete on an overnight ferry to be at our yacht for departure in Athens. He cooked some of the most amazing Greek food I could have imagined, I’m obsessed with the sardines the Greeks prepare. They are literally a multi-vitamin of the sea.

On the first morning, Kostas didn’t wake up one of the girls for breakfast or have it ready to her specifications. A complaint email was sent imediatley to the company from one of the girls about his lack of initiative and how poorly prepared he was. I suggested to her that he just needed a little direction about what to cook (for their extreme diets), and politely told the girl there was no need for an instant complaint, instead she should just tell him what she would like and when. This was the first incident that set the theme of what was to follow later on.

To be fair, I put the blinkers on for the rest of the trip and it was great. There is probably no better place to this time of year than exploring the Greek islands in summer than on a brand new 54-foot yacht. Frequent ocean swims, exploring new islands, docking at marinas front and centre to epic restaurants, and eating exceptional food (Greek food is top 3 in the world for me), partying, etc. That was until last night’s incident which really frustrated me.

Our Skipper had organised with his good friend on the island of Sifnos (highly recommend this island) to borrow a car and take us to the best view of the island for sunset and dinner, allowing us to avoid paying a stupidly expensive taxi to get there. In his goodwill, he was to make two trips to get us there.

On the second trip, which I was a part of, he accidentally drove off a little too quickly before one of the girls was in the car (as we had completely stopped traffic due to the girls taking forever to get in). Nothing happened to her, but she got in the car, slammed the door, and firmly demanded an apology. The skipper was upset she slammed the door of his friend’s car and didn’t apologise. This petty event essentially cost the Skipper all of his tips ~600 euros (the main way they earn money) as ALL the girls instantly sided with the door-slamming girl.

Of course, I opened my mouth and told the girls to recognise the huge favour the Skipper was doing for us by borrowing his friend’s car to take us. This went down like a lead balloon and basically ruined the whole vibe of the trip.

Lucky it was the last night. Not a big deal for me, I wasn’t attracted to any of them (it’s too hard for these girls to compete with Argentine girls), but I did generally enjoy the company of most of them.

When we arrived back at the Port in Athens, the skipper informed me that Kostas and maybe even himself would lose their jobs, due to the complaint email sent by one of the girls (mentioned above). Only one review is allowed per yacht and the girls all planned to leave a bad review at the office once the trip was complete.

This pissed me off so much. As well as also not receiving ~600 euros worth of tips each (which we initially set aside for them pre-trip) for the wonderful food and huge favors these guys had done for us, they were also going to lose their job!?

One of the girls had strictly told us all that she was going to write the review and that she was “looking forward” to writing a bad review. So, after talking with the only other lad on the trip (South African, also a trader and rational thinking) we made a plan, he would distract them, while I snuck off the yacht and ran to company’s main office at the port, to write the one and only review.

The review I wrote paid huge compliments to both the skipper and Kostas. Turns out it was a good moral move, as you can see in the below message to me from the South African lad.

This trip confirmed my idea of the stereotype of this type of modern-day liberal woman. Absolutely oblivious to the hard work of others, in a positions of power, alpha-like, always correct and won’t tollerate a man standing up to them. The skipper and Kostas went out of their way many times to make our trip memorable and it’s sad that only two of us (both lads) we the only ones to recognised and appreciate this.

It’s a brutal profession our Greek crew are working in (yacht charters), especially when having to deal with these kinds of woman. I’m happy I had the chance to write the only review which turned out to save one man with a young family from losing his job.

What do you do now?

let’s say you’ve decided to set up here for a while like I have, and you want to get into a somewhat healthy routine or a productive schedule. Well, this is what my typical week looks like.

I’m a man of habit, and love a routine that typically involves this:

• Working.

• Gym.

• Cooking good quality high-nutrient food (meat, dairy, eggs, and fruit).

• Regular dates and catching up with mates.

• Planning a holiday escape from the city (yes, Buenos Aires is still a city in Latin America and noisy as fuck).

Working: My typical day starts by stumbling (pre-coffee) out of the apartment around 10 am and depending on how I feel I’ll either work from home or go to my favourite cafe.

I Should be keeping this cafe a secret because I love it and don’t want it to get over-ran, but it’s called La Noire in Chacarita, about a 5 min walk from my apartment, it’s essentially my “office”.

Once I arrive, I down about four, Australian quality, $1.50 flat whites before 12 pm, making sure I’m there for 10:30 am (US markets open time in Buenos Aires). The staff are lovely and wifi is excellent. There are always pretty girls coming in and out, it’s distracting. This seemed to hit a few nerves on Twitter, obviously depends on what you do for work, but I’ve found on my travels that if you put the time in, you can find a decent cafe to work from that ticks all the usual boxes.

So, I sit in La Noire most of the day and rack up a bill of <$10 including breakfast, (it’s Argentina and I tip well). It beats sitting in an office in the West, too scared to have a conversation outside of your job role in case you offend someone. Also, co-working spaces can be wanky and full of woke lefties that would likely glue their hands to the road supporting climate change (Just Stop Oil flogs) or the extremely overpriced and crowded Selina co-working hell holes. But, to be fair the WeWork in Buenos Aires looks fucken epic, and only $90 per month, trouble is it’s too far away from me.

Gym: Whenever I’ve had enough of trading I head to the gym around 1-3 pm, to beat the knock-off-work crowd, such a luxury with this lifestyle.

The best gym I’ve found is the Megatlon chain. I’m certainly no serious bodybuilder but gyms are not Buenos Aires’ strong suit. They’re seriously crowded, people can be pushy, and I max out the range of dumbells at a measly 34kgs. Especially coming from Australia where gyms are epic. My membership was $120 for 6 months so I can’t really complain. If you stay in the Palermo area the Megatlon at Los Arcos is better than Villa Crespo. Also, there is a good gym in Palermo Soho called Always, you can rock up to it and pay $3 for a day pass.

Food: It’s an unbeatable feeling straight after the gym wandering into a Parrilla (Argentine steakhouse) and ordering a big fat steak for $10. I think I’ve documented that enough, so, as you’ve decided to stay here in Buenos Aires for a while it’s time to do your own cooking.

I grew up on a hobby farm in Tasmania, and from an earlier post I wrote (regarding my thoughts on vegans), you could probably guess my diet is mostly meat, eggs, dairy, and some fruit. This diet can be difficult and expensive in some places in the world but Argentina has the best farmland for this diet in the world. Lucky for me I live close to Avenida Corrientes, Villa Crespo, which has me covered for all of these categories.

Local carnecerias (butchers) are where it’s at, actually, even Coto, the main supermarket chain, has great meat. People find it funny that I’m obsessed with meat here after all my time here, but it’s seriously it’s a huge part of why I live here in Argentina. Buy a cast iron pan and stock up on Argentine ribeye from the butcher, 1kg will cost you $5! I love picada (ground beef) and which costs $2.5 per kg, and milanesas which is the Argentine schnitzel are about $1 each. Estancia Don Miguel Carniceria on Avenida Corrientes or Cabana Juramento in Palermo is the best.

I strongly recommend attending an asado if the opportunity ever presents itself. I think no other BBQ in the world comes close to an Argentine asado.

I found a good shop for farm dairy products called La Vacalin Lechera, which has artesian yogurt, milk, and butter. Tienda Nova is an upmarket deli supermarket, which has my free-range eggs, and a whole lot of other good shit, both of these places are on Avinida Corrientes but are a chain and are scattered all around Buenos Aires. Lots of quality fruit stores, usually owned by Peruvians. You pay 70c for an avocado and $1.20 for a punnet of blueberries. Ridiculously cheap prices.

Dates: It’s very easy to tee up a date as a foreigner. Local women seem extremely interested as to why you are here. I’ve been through stages where I go on many per week, then have some weeks when I really can’t be bothered. It’s certainly nice to have this as a choice, unlike in Australia.

I can’t tell you enough how much of a game-changer it was when I finally got my own independent apartment after months in rule-stricken Airbnb’s with hosts keeping a close watch at the door of who comes in and out (I was in catholic conservative Peru). This certainly set me back some fun times. Lads, definitely get an Airbnb as separate as you can from the hosts.

Once settled, don’t let dating app messaging take up too much time as it can be distracting from your work. However, the apps are unreal in Argentina. The general consensus amongst some of my well-travelled friends is that Buenos Aires is the number one city in the world for dating apps.

Go from dating apps to Instagram and get to the point quickly, meeting for drinks or coffee. Argentina is one of the only places I’ll go for a first-date dinner because it is so cheap. Because everything is open so late here, you’ll struggle to get a girl out of her home before 9 pm, that’s about as early as Argentines have dinner too. Tips are to pick a bar/restaurant combo so you can either just have drinks or do dinner.

Obviously, with dating, the more Spanish you learn/know the better in Latin America. Argentina is very different from the rest of Spanish-speaking Latin America. Argentine girls are not Latinas (in my opinion) and many will have a decent level of English. My lack of quality conversation skills in Spanish hasn’t set me back too much, but I find that it will do the longer I stay here. Tough for a bogan Tasmanian who use to fuck around in high school language class, with the go-ahead from Dad who would never get the belt out for the dismal grades I got in Italian.

Mates (buddies to you Americans): Because it’s easily the best city in the world to eat out regarding price and quality I usually head out a couple of times a week for dinner with the lads, it’s always good to have that to look forward to. Also, catch up with the lads every Thursday at the bar. This is the best Spanish lesson I get, although everyone is either educated in the US or a gringo, they all speak Spanish. I also love an end-of-week cigar, especially when you can get a decent cigar for 1/3 the price that you would pay in the US.

Planning holidays: I always need a holiday to look forward to, even if I’m loving life in my routine. I base my holidays on how much money I make options trading. Lucky for me, I’ve had a good trading month and that means I’m off to Europe for a short trip tomorrow.

Flying out of Buenos Aires can be a ball-ache. There is a reason you’ll hardly hear an Australian accent, and there are fewer Americans in Buenos Aires than, let’s say, Mexico and that’s because it’s a fucken expensive long way to get here. Take this as a pro or con if you like, but for me after 4 years in Bali, Indonesia (basically another suburb of Australia) it’s a pro. There is one exception here, I’ve found that domestic airfares in the low tourist season can be reasonably priced.

It was a welcomed sight when I check prices for my second trip to one of my favourite places in the world, El Chalten, Argentine Patagonia. Low season prices are a real thing and I feel you get the best geoarbitrage and experience, sometimes prices are slashed by half, as I found out when I booked a cabin in El Chalten for $30 per night, ($90 per night in high season). Also to top this trip off, return business class flights to El Calafate (the closest airport to El Chalten) with Aerolineas Argentinas came to a total of $350, for a 3 hr journey each way. Just wait till you experience the silence and sheer breathtaking space Argentine Patagonia offers. After considerable time in noisy Buenos Aires, it’s honestly a feeling like no other. The 2.5hr bus ride from El Calfate Airport to El Chalten will confirm this.

One of the biggest tips I can offer to save yourself so much logistics and hassle is to book flights from the smaller airport AEP (Aeroparque) instead of the main international airport EZE (Ezeiza).

As a 32-year-old single Australian lad I think the ideal routine, in my mind, can be summed up simply;

• Short intense gym workouts 4x per week (Dorian Yates method).

• Working towards early financial freedom (not for the purpose of retiring at 65 years old).

• Good quality animal-based food,

• Mates (with the same train of thought) and regular dates.

• Holiday for a complete change of scenery.

I’ve found it takes a few months to really get used to a new city until you find a consistent rhythm and routine. I highly encourage this type of slow semi-assimilating traveling, as it can be an extremely liberating feeling of achievement setting up something like this in a completely foreign country, escaping the nonsense that’s taking over most Western countries.

If a muppet like me, from a small island in Southern Australia can make it happen in the Southern Cone of South America, anyone can.

Especially in your 30s, with career and money behind you. I threw my professional career away in Australia, maybe because I’m just a nutter, or maybe because in my head I couldn’t get to the age of 40 without turning over some stones and traveling to Latin America.

Since then, and well over a year ago, I’ve come to realise I’m a strange type of traveler, quite introverted. I don’t want to be called a digital nomad and my style of traveling certainly isn’t backpacking jumping from hostel to hostel, hitting up free walking tours, with a couple of days in each place, sharing a room with 18-year-olds living off Dad’s money. It’s booking an Airbnb and doing it all by myself, then if I like the place, staying longer and, somewhat, assimilating into the culture. This leads me to discuss my experience in Argentina as a single lad.
